Starting a small business in Madhya Pradesh (2026): costs, wages, rent, licences
Madhya Pradesh is a low-cost, lower-income interior state: minimum wages (₹12,425/month unskilled from Apr 2026) and rents are modest, but fuel is among the costliest in India (petrol ₹114–116/L because of high state VAT) and commercial power rose 4.8% on average for FY 2026-27. Indore is a strong food-and-trading city (namkeen, poha-jalebi, Sarafa night market) while much of the state is rural and cash-heavy. The distinctive rules are religious: liquor sales are banned in 19 places of religious importance from April 2025, and Ujjain's Simhastha 2028 will bring a pilgrim boom with tighter restrictions. Shop registration is cheap and renewal was abolished in Dec 2025.
